Overview

About overnight care

Nights can be the hardest part of the day to cover. Overnight support means someone is there for the evening routine and through the night, so the household can rest.

The right overnight model depends on what happens during the night. We agree that after an assessment rather than assuming, and we will be clear about what a given arrangement does and does not cover.

What it covers

What this support can include

  • Evening routines and settling for the night
  • Reassurance for people who wake disorientated or anxious
  • Support getting to and from the bathroom
  • Repositioning and comfort where this is part of the agreed plan
  • Drinks and light refreshments during the night
  • A morning handover before the day begins

Who it suits

Who this is often right for

  • People who are unsettled, anxious or at risk during the night
  • Family carers who are not sleeping because they are on call
  • People recovering at home who need reassurance overnight
  • Households trialling overnight support before deciding long-term

How we work

Our approach

  • The model is agreed, not assumed

How an overnight arrangement works is set out clearly after assessment so expectations match reality.

  • Written night records

What happened during the night is recorded so the day team and family are informed.

  • Reviewed regularly

Overnight needs change quickly. We review the arrangement rather than leave it running unchanged.
